The Lucia Christmas Market is located in the heart of vibrant Berlin, yet comfortably embedded in the romantic setting of a historic 19th century brewery – today’s creative location of the Kulturbrauerei. This Christmas market is dedicated to the Nordic countries. Lucia, the bringer of light in the dark winter time, gives warmth and security, lets dreams grow and gives hope to those who have worries. Originally from Sweden, she is now worshipped throughout Scandinavia and celebrated every year on December 13th. The Berlin Luciakör celebrates this day in the Nordic tradition with a parade through the courtyards accompanied by Swedish songs and then invites you to an Allsâng. In the afternoon, when Lucia opens its doors, families are more likely to go on a pre-Christmas expedition, plunge into times long past at a small knight’s castle and on a star ladder or whirl through the clear winter air in a nostalgic chain carousel. Incidentally, the little ones leave what is probably their most important letter of the year in their letterbox. And if you don’t have the time to write a wish, you can whisper it secretly into the ear of Santa Claus, who is stomping around the courtyards. The darker it gets, the more Lucia shines: thousands of little dots of light glitter and sparkle as they make their way through the courtyards of the Kulturbrauerei. Now the hour of the grown-ups has come. Lucia is the meeting point for Berliners and interested people from all over the world who are looking for that very special gift and who want to taste local and Scandinavian delicacies. Speaking of delicacies… If you only visit Lucia once, it is absolutely impossible for you to try the more than twenty variations – from the traditional mulled wine or the white from the winegrower, to Swedish Glögg and Finnish Glögi, to Icelandic mulled wine. And those who actually try it and suddenly find themselves in the arms of a great white angel need not doubt. The angel really exists, he passes by every evening and wraps himself in wisdom as well as protection. Besides all the things you usually wish for in a cosy Christmas market, Lucia has a few rarities waiting to be discovered. Cosy warmth is provided by flickering Swedish fires and the unique “open-air jacket heating”. At the bizarre installation, the shivering people slip into warmed fur coats, which are heated by a nostalgic wood stove. If the coats have just been taken, it is only a few steps to the mobile sauna of a different kind – without wheels and without undressing – or into “The Wandering Yurt”. And for those who want to let their musical talent and pre-Christmas spirit ring out, the only place to go is on Thursdays for happy choir singing
